Why puppies need a well-planned diet
Good nutrition is always important, but it’s particularly so in a puppy's first year. Feeding them the right diet at this stage sets puppies up for a long, healthy, and happy life.
In their first six months, puppies do a lot of growing. They build bones, tissues, muscles, and internal organs, start growing a vast network of neural connections, make great leaps forward in their brain and cognitive function, and develop an immune system. For the same reason, nutritional deficiencies at this stage are also very serious and can lead to health issues that affect the rest of their lives.
Why is it important to go organic?
At LOONAWELL, we’re big fans of giving dogs organic food and treats, for several reasons. The most important one is that we want the best for our dogs, and choosing organic means we’re starting out with highly nutritious raw materials that are filled with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are healthy and nourishing.
What’s more, by using organic ingredients, we know that the fruits, vegetables, and animals were cultivated and grown on land where no pesticides, fertilizers, or artificial additives were used, all of which can be harmful to dogs—even more so for puppies.
Our rule of thumb is that if we wouldn’t eat it, we won’t feed it to our dogs. So, when we make our LOONAWELL healthy organic dog treats, we only use organic, human-grade ingredients and exclude genetically modified ingredients or any other synthetic ingredients known in the industry as “fillers.” These ingredients, which include salt, sugar, and other cheap commodities, merely add bulk without adding nutritional value. They’re also a common culprit for upsetting your puppy's sensitive stomach.
How to include healthy treats in your puppy’s diet
You can incorporate treats into your dog’s diet when they are 12 weeks old at the earliest. Keep in mind that treats should be a complement to their meals, so it’s important to factor them in when planning your dog’s diet. Aim for treats to be no more than 10% of their daily intake of food.
Your home likely has options for healthy, natural treats. A few examples of tasty, nutritionally dense treats include bananas (in small amounts), fresh melons or watermelons (both without seeds as these could be a choking hazard), and gently cooked apples, carrots, and broccoli florets.
These are great for rewarding and training your dog at home, but what about when you’re out on walks? It’s not very convenient to prepare and carry these items with you. This is where buying good quality treats (that are also easily portable!) for your puppy becomes a necessity.
Because fillers and other low-quality ingredients are common in commercially produced pet foods, it’s not always easy to find good, healthy treats for your dog. You may end up spending hours studying labels and reading nutritional information on packages and still be confused.
