Broccoli belong to a group of so called functional foods. These are foods that have a positive impact in our health. In the case of Broccoli, the benefits have been shown to occur both in humans and also in dogs:

1.    Is good for a healthy gut: broccoli contain certain small molecules (called isothiocyanates) that have antimicrobial effects against pathogenic bacteria and fungi, and therefore help maintain a healthy gut. Broccoli is also a good source of fiber, which further contributes to a healthy gut and colon.

2.    Has anti-cancer properties: broccoli contain sulforaphane, that is a phytochemical known to have a protective function against different types of cancer.

3.    Is a source of antioxidants: broccoli contain a great cocktail of antioxidants including Vitamin C, carotenoids, tocopherol and phenolics. Antioxidants play an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system and mental performance.

4.    Is a Source of vitamins and minerals: besides Vitamin C, broccoli are also a good source of vitamin K (essential for a healthy blood) and vitamins B1 and B2 (important for energy production).

How to prepare & serve it to your dog:

To preserve nutrients, steam or boil a few broccoli florets for 3-5 minute but don’t overcook. Let the broccoli cool down, cut it in small pieces and serve alone, as a treat, or part of a meal and in combination with other ingredients. Like everything else, serve in moderation. The amount of broccoli in your dog’s diet should be less than 10% of the total daily food intake. Avoid the broccoli stalks as these can cause obstruction in the esophagus and also be hard to digest.
