A foundation for longevity and long-term wellbeing

For years, digestion in dogs was viewed in relatively simple terms, whether food was tolerated well, absorbed properly, or caused visible discomfort.

But over the years, science has revealed something far more intricate.

Much like in humans, a dog’s gut is home to trillions of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and other microbes) that together form what is known as the microbiome. And increasingly, researchers are exploring how this invisible world may influence far more than digestion alone: from immunity and inflammatory balance to resilience, metabolism, mood, longevity and long-term wellbeing.

It is a quiet shift in perspective, one that moves canine nutrition beyond calories or protein percentages, and toward a broader understanding of how health may be shaped over time.

And perhaps nowhere is this more fascinating than in the relationship between the gut and longevity itself.

Before founding LOONAWELL, I spent years working in innovation strategy within the food ingredient industry, including projects connected to the field of the microbiome. At the time, there was already growing scientific evidence around the relationship between microbial ecosystems, nutrition, and long-term health.

Today, I have the opportunity to revisit this conversation from an entirely different perspective: through the company I built from the ground up, and through the lens of canine nutrition, longevity and long-term wellbeing.

The Invisible Ecosystem Inside a Dog’s Gut

Inside a dog’s digestive tract lives an extraordinarily complex ecosystem.

Some microorganisms help break down fibers and nutrients that would otherwise remain inaccessible. Others contribute to the production of beneficial compounds, support the intestinal barrier, or interact with the immune system in ways science is still working to fully understand.

What appears to matter most is not the presence of one single “good” bacteria, but rather the diversity and balance of the ecosystem as a whole.

Like a forest, a dog’s microbiome seems to thrive through richness, variation, and equilibrium.

And like any ecosystem, it is constantly influenced by the surrounding environment: stress, medications, lifestyle, age, and most importantly, nutrition.

More Than Digestion

One of the most compelling aspects of microbiome research is how interconnected it has become.

A dog’s gut is increasingly being studied not as an isolated digestive organ, but as part of a much larger biological network.

Emerging research suggests that the microbiome may play a role in:

  • immune function,
  • inflammatory regulation,
  • nutrient metabolism,
  • skin health,
  • stress resilience,
  • and behavioral balance.

Much remains to be discovered. But the direction of the science is becoming increasingly clear: the body’s internal systems do not operate independently from one another. They communicate constantly.

This is part of what makes nutrition so important over time. A dog’s diet shapes the microbial ecosystem within the gut, which is increasingly linked to digestion, immunity, inflammatory balance, and long-term wellbeing.

One input. Multiple downstream effects.

And this naturally raises an important question: Will highly processed, low-diversity diets shape the microbiome in the same way as moisture-rich foods made with diverse, high-quality ingredients?

Nutrition as One of the Central Pillars

If the microbiome is shaped daily by what a dog eats, then nutrition becomes far more than fuel alone.

It becomes one of the central pillars influencing the internal ecosystem that supports long-term health.

And this is where the conversation around canine nutrition becomes particularly important.

Modern dogs are often exposed to repetitive diets, highly processed ingredients, low-moisture feeding patterns, and formulations primarily designed around efficiency and cost optimization. Over time, this may limit dietary diversity and reduce exposure to the wide range of fibers, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and naturally occurring compounds that increasingly appear relevant for microbiome health.

By contrast, thoughtfully formulated foods built around genuine ingredient diversity introduce a broader range of nutritional building blocks into the digestive environment such as different fibers, different plant compounds, different antioxidants and different fatty acids.

Importantly, ingredient diversity alone is not enough. Ingredient quality, formulation integrity, moisture content, and the degree of processing likely play an important role in how these compounds ultimately interact with the body and the microbiome itself.

Moisture-rich foods may also help support digestive comfort and create a gentler digestive environment, particularly as dogs age.

Certain ingredients, such as berries, mushrooms, herbs, vegetables, and omega-3-rich foods, are increasingly being explored not only for their nutritional value alone, but for how they help support microbial balance and long-term resilience when meaningfully incorporated into well-formulated diets.

How LOONAWELL Supports a Healthy Microbiome

At LOONAWELL, many of the nutritional principles increasingly associated with microbiome health have been at the core of our philosophy from the very beginning.

When we developed our Complete Food collection, we did so around what we internally call our Excellence List,  a framework designed to guide every recipe we create. Looking back, many of these principles are deeply connected to what we now understand to be important for supporting a healthy microbiome: ingredient diversity, high digestibility, moisture-rich nutrition, omega-3 fatty acids, functional ingredients, and carefully selected raw materials of exceptional quality.

Individually, these may appear like small nutritional decisions. But together, they reflect something much larger: A longevity-oriented nutritional framework designed to support dogs through consistency, diversity, ingredient quality, and cumulative care over time.

A More Thoughtful Way of Feeding Dogs

I do not believe the future of dog nutrition lies in complexity for the sake of complexity.

But I do believe we are entering a more thoughtful era, one where feeding dogs is increasingly viewed through the lens of long-term wellbeing rather than short-term functionality alone.

The microbiome reminds us that health is not built by one ingredient, one supplement, or one perfect meal.

It is shaped gradually, through patterns. Through consistency.  Through diversity.  Through cumulative care.

And perhaps that is the most important shift of all: Understanding that what we place in a dog’s bowl today may influence much more than a single meal, it may help shape the internal systems that support health for years to come.

FAQ

What is the canine microbiome?

Much like in humans, a dog’s digestive tract naturally contains trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that together form what is known as the microbiome.

Importantly, many of these microorganisms are not harmful. In fact, they play an important role in functions such as digestion, immune regulation, nutrient metabolism, and maintaining balance within the gut environment.

Increasingly, researchers are exploring how the dog's microbiome may influence their long-term health and wellbeing.

Why is the microbiome important for dogs?

The microbiome plays an important role in digestive health and is increasingly associated with broader physiological functions, including immune regulation, nutrient metabolism, and resilience. A balanced microbiome helps support a healthier gut environment, which in turn may contribute to a dog’s overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Does nutrition influence a dog’s microbiome?

Yes. Diet is considered one of the strongest factors influencing the composition and diversity of the canine microbiome. Ingredient quality, dietary diversity, moisture content, digestibility, and formulation integrity all play a role in shaping a dog's gut ecosystem.

What ingredients are associated with microbiome support in dogs?

Researchers are increasingly studying how nutrition influences the canine microbiome. This includes not only fibers, omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, mushrooms, herbs, vegetables, and antioxidant-rich ingredients, but also the overall quality and digestibility of the diet itself.

High-quality proteins, thoughtfully selected raw materials, moisture-rich nutrition, ingredient diversity, and formulation integrity may all play an important role in shaping the gut environment and supporting long-term wellbeing.

Why does ingredient diversity matter for dogs?

For many years, dog owners were encouraged to feed the exact same diet every single day in the name of digestive stability. And while consistency remains important, researchers are increasingly exploring whether thoughtfully introduced ingredient diversity may also play a beneficial role in supporting the microbiome.

Different ingredients contribute different nutritional compounds, including fibers, antioxidants, fatty acids, and phytonutrients. A more diverse nutritional environment may help support microbial diversity within the gut and expose dogs to a broader range of nutritional building blocks over time.

The key, however, is thoughtful formulation and ingredient quality, not constant dietary disruption or excess.

How does LOONAWELL approach microbiome health?
